Connor Bedard, Brock Faber and Luke Hughes are this year's finalists for the Calder Trophy, the NHL announced Tuesday.

The Calder Trophy is awarded to "the player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition" and is determined through voting by the Professional Hockey Writers Association.

The Buffalo Sabres have rehired Lindy Ruff, the last head coach to lead the franchise to the NHL playoffs back in 2011.

Ruff, 64, was fired by the New Jersey Devils after 61 games this season. He replaces Don Granato, whom the Sabres fired after three seasons.

Ruff coached the Sabres for 15 seasons, from 1997 to 2013.

General manager Tom Fitzgerald is looking for a new coach for the New Jersey Devils and interim skipper Travis Green remains in the running for the job.

Speaking three days after the Devils ended a disappointing season by missing the playoffs, Fitzgerald said he hopes to have a full-time coach in place for the NHL draft in late June.

"Travis is well aware of my intentions," Fitzgerald said Thursday. "I owe it to the organization to make sure I was following the coaching world with who I believe would be the perfect coach for this group moving forward for what's available out there."

New Jersey Devils star forward Jack Hughes was ruled out of Tuesday's game against the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs due to an upper-body injury.

Devils interim coach Travis Green would not specify how long that Hughes would be out of action.

The New Jersey Devils signed one of the top college free agents Thursday, with Western Michigan forward Dylan Wendt joining them on a two-year contract.

Wendt will initially join the Utica Comets, the Devils' AHL affiliate, on an AHL amateur tryout for the remainder of the season. His two-year entry-level deal with the Devils will start in the 2024-25 campaign.

The New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils started Wednesday night's game with a brawl involving all 10 skaters on the ice off the opening faceoff.

The main event was Rangers forward Matt Rempe taking on New Jersey's Kurtis MacDermid, with the two having history from the previous time the Devils visited Madison Square Garden on March 11.

Forward Wayne Simmonds announced his retirement from the NHL on Monday after 15 seasons with six teams.

The Philadelphia Flyers are signing him to a one-day contract and will honor his career on April 13 during a game against the New Jersey Devils.

Simmonds, 35, appeared in 1,037 games and tallied 526 points (263 goals, 263 assists) and 1,313 penalty minutes.

The New Jersey Devils traded for Jake Allen from the Montreal Canadiens as veteran goaltending insurance.

The Devils are sending a conditional third-round pick to the Canadiens, who are retaining 50% of Allen's $3.85 million salary. 

The Winnipeg Jets acquired Tyler Toffoli from the New Jersey Devils for a third round pick in 2024 and a second rounder in 2025.

The Jets will be Toffoli's sixth team in the past five seasons, and the transaction marks the fourth time he's been traded over the previous four years.

"You gotta be prepared for anything that can happen," Toffoli told TSN after the trade. "Obviously with this going down today, it's just another step along the journey. It's an exciting time being able to join a really good team. They're playing really well. They have a lot of the pieces so hopefully we can make a push."

The New Jersey Devils, struggling to contend in a clogged Eastern Conference a season after winning a playoff round last season, fired coach Lindy Ruff Monday, the team announced.

Travis Green, an assistant for Ruff and the former coach of the Vancouver Canucks, was named the club's interim coach. The announcement was made by Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald, a day after New Jersey lost to the Los Angeles Kings, 5-1.
