The Seattle Kraken have fired head coach Dave Hakstol after three seasons, the team announced Monday.

Hakstol, who was the first coach in the Kraken's short history, was dismissed after the team failed to make the playoffs after finishing with 100 points and advancing to the Western Conference semifinals last season.

The club on Monday also announced assistant coach Paul McFarland would not return next season.

Seattle Kraken general manager Ron Francis said Monday evaluations are still ongoing about whether there will be changes with head coach Dave Hakstol or any of the coaching staff after the third-year franchise missed the playoffs.

Francis said the team is still in the middle of examining what happened this season and he would not confirm whether Hakstol would return for a fourth year.

"There's a lot of things we have to look at and factor in, and we'll continue to do that in the next few weeks," Francis said.

The New York Rangers have acquired Alex Wennberg from the Seattle Kraken for a second round pick in 2024 and a fourth rounder in 2025.

The fourth-round pick, which originally belonged to the Stars, will become a third-rounder if Dallas defenseman Nils Lundkvist reaches 55 points combined from last season and this season, sources said.

Wennberg is on the final year of a three-year deal that pays him $4.5 million annually.

Seattle Kraken forward Alex Wennberg won't play Monday night against the Calgary Flames amid a potential trade.

He didn't take part in the morning skate, and coach Dave Hakstol confirmed Wennberg's status, citing "trade-related issues."

Wennberg, 29, is in the final season of a three-year, $13.5 million contract and is due to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the league year.

Veteran winger Tomas Tatar is on the move again with the Colorado Avalanche trading him Friday to the Seattle Kraken in exchange for a 2024 fifth-round pick.

Tatar signed a one-year deal with the Avalanche with the expectation he could provide the 2022 Stanley Cup champions with the sort of secondary scoring that could help them win a second title in three years.

Seattle Kraken goaltender Philipp Grubauer was placed on injured reserve Sunday, the team announced.

Grubauer (lower body) and defenseman Justin Schultz (upper body) both left Saturday night's 4-3 overtime loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning. The goalie stopped 21 of 23 shots before exiting and did not factor into the decision.

Creating Winter Classic jerseys for the Vegas Golden Knights and the Seattle Kraken provided a unique challenge for the NHL and Adidas.

Usually the jerseys for the NHL's annual outdoor game -- which will be held at T-Mobile Park in Seattle on Jan. 1, 2024 -- are influenced by nostalgia, mining the history of the teams involved for their designs. But Vegas and Seattle are the two most recent NHL expansion franchises, with the Golden Knights entering the league in 2017-18 and the Kraken in 2021-22.

The solution: The NHL and Adidas imagined what these teams might have worn had they existed in the 1910s or 1920s and worked with them on refining these looks.

Florida Panthers center Sam Bennett, who has yet to play this season, has returned to practice and could be back in the lineup when Florida hosts the Seattle Kraken in Sunrise on Saturday night.

Bennett, who scored 44 goals over the past two seasons, sustained a lower-body injury against the Tampa Bay Lightning in an Oct. 5 preseason game.

"It feels great," Bennett said of his recovery. "When you've been out for a while, you really miss being out there."

Seattle Kraken forward Andre Burakovsky is expected to miss six to eight weeks after being injured in the game over the weekend against the New York Rangers.

The team announced Monday that Burakovsky underwent an unspecified procedure to repair an upper-body injury.

The Seattle Kraken will be without Brandon Tanev for at least a month after the forward sustained a lower body injury in last week's season opener against the Vegas Golden Knights.

The Kraken announced Monday that Tanev will miss four-to-six weeks.

"He competes so hard every night and brings pace and energy. He's been a big part of our penalty kill, so all of those elements," Seattle coach Dave Hakstol said. "You hate to see guys with injuries, especially early on, but fact is it's part of the game and we'll be without him for a few weeks."
